Let’s face it; the economy is not that great. Despite the efforts of our government to get things flowing we are still looking at unemployment over 9% and gas prices averaging over $3 nationwide. What that means is we all want to make sure we spend our money wisely because there is less of it to go around. Normally entertainment dollars is where we would cut back and that is fine, except for one thing: the media center PC, centralized powerhouse of home entertainment at a low, low price.
So what is a media center or home theater PC? Let’s put it in easy to grasp terms. Take your home computer with internet access, combine it with your iPod, mix in your DVD player, your blu-ray player, stir in a healthy dose of your DVR, give it a splash of Netflix or Blockbuster online, and hook it up to your TV. Take all of that stuff and make it easy to use through a handy remote control and you have a media center.
Some people call it a home theater PC and that is valid if the device is an actual PC with a flow blow copy of Windows or Linux. A media center is a specialized box focused to do the same task but usually smaller and cheaper. Most people think of them as a way to watch movies, but that is not the end of what you can do, it may be a big part, but it’s not over there. Right now you might have 3 or 4 devices connected to your TV, but this machine will bring it all down to 1. Although there is nothing a Media Center can do to replace your x-Box or PS3 it can enhance it.
