Back during the summer I created a VM (virtual machine) server. The idea is that I have a somewhat beefy PC with a lot of storage running VMWare's ESXi server which is an operating system that lets you run other virtual machine on it. A virtual machine is a self-contained computer that does not actually exist on any physical hardware of its own but is fooled into thinking it does by the VMWare … [Read more...]
Amazon Watchlist

I have been using Amazon Instant Video for over a year to supplement my TV watching ability. Since I don't have cable Amazon has become the source for shows I want to watch but could not view otherwise. Despite the money I spend with them I am actually still saving a ton over keeping my cable bill going. Yet with all the greatness of Amazon and all that it has done for me I have always had … [Read more...]
Pandora – The Other Side of Your Media Center

Something I have not spent much time talking about on the site, but I have spent countless hours utilizing is the greatness of streaming audio services like Pandora. Now I know there are other offerings out there and depending on which media center device you have, Pandora may not be available to you but another service might be. At some point I will get around to trying the alternatives, but … [Read more...]
A Review of Skitter TV

We have discussed Skitter TV before and I even brought it up during my last “Get rid of Cable” rant. Skitter is a streaming internet TV service. Not just the content but the actual live local channel. After speaking with the fine people over at Skitter TV I was able to get hold of a trial of their service. The following are my thoughts on their product. While they did offer me the … [Read more...]
Plex Media Server Install

You asked for it so here it is, a comprehensive guide to setting up Plex Server for Windows. This is a really good product made even better by the fact that it is free. I do not claim that Plex is perfection; just that it offers a very good and very valuable service for free. The issues are minor and the benefits are major. With that in mind I have put Plex on my list of Top 10 Roku … [Read more...]
Plex Updates Roku Channel

Plex Server recently announced a new interface for the Roku media center device. With that announcement I decided to jump back into the world of Plex and give it another round of testing. Plex is a media streaming device with client interfaces on a number of good platforms including some LG Smart TVs on the market. The one I use most is the Roku of course. I hope someday they get … [Read more...]
Another Look at Cutting the Cord

A few things have changed in my efforts to keep cable out of my house. I am moving soon and I wanted to re-evaluate the value of “Cutting the Cord.” Before I cut the cord my cable bill at one time was as high as $110 a month. That included HD channels, DVR services and HBO. I switched off that plan and then spent a few years with Dish network where I kept the HD Channels and DVR but … [Read more...]
An Interview with the President of Skitter TV

A few weeks back an update to the WD Live TV Hub introduced me to Skitter TV. How I missed this service during my research is clearly a failing on my part but which I plan on rectifying or at the very least redeeming myself a bit with this article. Last night I had the opportunity to speak with Robert Saunders President and Co-Founder of Skitter TV. My website is not one that goes after and … [Read more...]
PlayOn, is it worth the lifetime subscription?

I am no where close to complete with my evaluation of the PlayOn software, but I have at least done enough to bring you a few morsels of information. PlayOn recently offered a free Roku LT with the purchase of the lifetime subscription to PlayOn. The Roku cost $49 by itself which means the lifetime subscription at $79 is an incredible buy. Getting both for $79 was too good of a deal for me … [Read more...]
Tempted by Skitter TV

A recent update to the WD Live TV Hub introduced a new service on the device called Skitter TV. If you have gotten a chance to look at this service then what you probably have found is that you can not use it. Apparently very few people in this country can. Yet it seems so appealing and exactly what people ready to "cut the cord" have been asking for. Skitter TV is streaming television and … [Read more...]
