Back during the summer I created a VM (virtual machine) server. The idea is that I have a somewhat beefy PC with a lot of storage running VMWare's ESXi server which is an operating system that lets you run other virtual machine on it. A virtual machine is a self-contained computer that does not actually exist on any physical hardware of its own but is fooled into thinking it does by the VMWare … [Read more...]
Another Thought about Dropping Cable

Earlier this week I happened to come across this article about Cutting the Cable: Pay TV Subscribers Turn to Internet. One of the things it made me think about is that while the number of people cutting out subscription TV altogether is not that high there are also plenty of people who are lowering their subscription levels and augmenting their service with internet based services. Now I am … [Read more...]
Walking Dead S3 E1 – Seed

Well Dish Network customers may not be able to watch The Walking Dead but I sure can thanks to my season pass through Amazon. I purchase each full episode for $1.89. That may seem like a bit much on the surface but 1) I own the episode and 2) I have it budgeted so that I can buy the episodes for my favorite shows and still save money over cable/satellite each month. Yeah for me. Now onto … [Read more...]
Think again Dish

For those of you who think my last few posts indicate Dish may be a better choice over DirecTV let me stop you right there and bring you back to reality a bit. Dish is no better and their treatment of me as I toyed with the idea of getting their service at my house is enough to prove it to me. Whether my story sways you at all is not the goal, but you should be informed before you jump into … [Read more...]
A curious thing happened with my cable internet service

I do have a bit of a story to tell regarding my experience attempting to sign up for Dish Network which occurred just after my attempt to get Direct TV. While I admit to already being in a bad mindset given the treatment I received from the DirecTV sales associates, Dish Network really did not do much better. But, that story will have to wait because something very odd and very amazing … [Read more...]
Back Again and Prepared to Flame DirecTV

Perhaps you didn't even know I was gone. That's probably I stockpiled a few articles and left them there to be auto posted spread out over most of the month of September. So now that you realize I was gone, the question becomes where was I. My family and I picked up and moved a few miles north into a much newer prettier home for our daughter to grow up in. Moving suck, I can tell you that … [Read more...]
Viacom and DirecTV Feud Effects Everyone

Even if you are not a customer of DirecTV it is possible that you are not affected by the feud between Viacom and the satellite cable provider. DirecTV has refused (perhaps rightly so) to pay Viacoms demanded fee for carrying its channels. DirecTV removed Viacom channels from its line up. This included Comedy Central and MTV. They subsequently announced on their website that their … [Read more...]
Goodbye to my HTPC

Wait. What? Did I just say that? Did I just do that? Yup it is true although not the whole story. This past weekend I disassembled my HTPC. It was a great machine. I probably went too cheap on the processor but for what it was it was great. So now you might be wondering why I took it apart. At first you might say to yourself I just went out there and built another HTPC. You … [Read more...]
WD Changes Their Interface

For those enjoying your WD Live TV or TV Hub you may have noticed a couple of firmware upgrades over the last couple of weeks. WD has done some nice little changes to their user interface. The changes include A new categories based screen for their services function. Now there are separate categories for things like Movies and Music along a left hand … [Read more...]
DISH Network in the News
I came by a couple of interesting articles related to DISH network and although I tout the ability and freedom of getting rid of cable and satellite services, I still felt these topics were interesting enough to talk about. Topic 1) DISH is releasing a new service for the Roku. Starting at $20 a month you can subscribe to international channels and stream their content live through your … [Read more...]
