I bought the Walking Dead season 1 on DVD when it first came out. Best Buy had a great deal on it and I took advantage. Got it on Blu-Ray too It took me awhile to watch the show because my wife hates horror and violence so I had to watch late night when I could. I thought the show was decent but not great. That all changed with season 2.
I picked up season 2 from Amazon. My budget for TV shows lets me buy one a month if I want as long as it fits into that $20 range, which the Walking Dead did. Again, it took me awhile to watch but it was worth it. Season 2 ramps up the personal dramas. It gives each character a little more screen time and development. We learn a lot more about Glen and we get some depth to Daryl. The only one that does not seem to get any development is T-Dog.
The big plot points revolve around a building level of hostility between Shane and Rick. Shane is going a bit crazy and cannot adjust himself to the fact Rick is back and Laurie (wife) and Carl (son) no longer are his responsibility. The building of this feud is well done, takes its time and comes to a logical conclusion. Sometimes we just can’t go back to the way it was.
We also get a great story line dealing with the disappearance of Sophie an 11-year-old girl who is part of the group and goes missing in the first episode. I can say that I did not see this coming, the way they resolve this story line is appropriate for the show but a very harsh reality to deal with.
I was also very happy with the season finale. It feels more like a resolution to the season and an opening for next season versus the way season 1 ended. I think you will also appreciate the zombie apocalypse action of the finale.
I do not think anyone ranks this show among the best on TV but this is a solid TV series with quality depth of character and story. It is a good shot at a horror genre that is tough to do with the constraints of broadcast TV even if it is on A&E which has looser boundaries than say NBC. I think if you enjoyed American Horror Story and you were OK with the neutered horror then you will love this show.
